HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Former Southern Miss women's soccer player Jana Mason was among 12 Conference USA student-athletes named to the recipient list of the Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship Award, C-USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky announced on Monday.
This is the third year the award has been named for Dr. Castañeda, who served Rice University for 46 years as an educator, coach and Faculty Athletics Representative before he passed away in November 2008. The conference annually presents the $4,000 Postgraduate Scholarship awards to graduates as selected by the C-USA Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors.
Mason was a four-year letterwinner at forward and midfield for the Golden Eagles, while also excelling in the classroom. The Tupelo, Miss., native was named the Outstanding Senior in Nutrition & Food Services, while receiving the C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal four times. Mason is planning to resume her studies this summer at Southern Miss to obtain a master's degree in nutrition.
"This is a well deserved award for Jana," said head coach Scott Ebke. "It shows not only the dedication to her team on the field but also her commitment to excellence in the classroom. Jana was a leader on both of those levels during her career."
In her senior season, Mason led the Golden Eagles with four assists while also starting 14 games and logging over 1,000 minutes. Only Erin Hamrick (77) played in more games during her Southern Miss career than Mason, who finished with 74 matches played in her four-year career. A 2010 All-CUSA Academic team member, Mason was also named to Southern Miss's various academic award lists every year and was a 2009 Academic All-Region team member as named by the Collegiate Sports Information Director of America and ESPN.
