HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss Head Soccer Coach Scott Ebke announced today the 2011 women's soccer schedule, a 20-match campaign headlined by a pair of in-state rivals and a tough conference slate.
The Golden Eagles begin their season in Oxford, Miss., when they take on the Rebels of Ole Miss in a non-conference rivalry game under the lights on August 19.
The team returns home for a two-game homestand and will take on Louisiana Tech (8/21) and Jacksonville State (8/26) in Hattiesburg at the Marshall Bell Track and Soccer Complex.
Following a trip to Louisiana-Lafayette (8/28), the Eagles return home to host Southeastern Louisiana (9/2) and in-state rival Mississippi State (9/4).
The team will only play one game at home in the month of September as they have five road dates scheduled including their conference opener.
Up first, Lipscomb (9/9) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff (9/11) in Starkville, followed by Northwestern State (9/16) in Natchitoches.
They will then open Conference USA play at Tulsa (9/23) and SMU (9/25) before returning home to face C-USA foe Colorado College (9/30).
Southern Miss welcomes UTEP to Hattiesburg on October 2 before they hit the road for a four-game trip at East Carolina (10/7), Marshall (10/9), Houston (10/14) and Rice (10/16).
Ebke's squad will close its regular season with a three-game homestand as they welcome reigning C-USA tournament champion Memphis (10/21), UAB (10/23) and 2010 regular season champion UCF (10/28) to Hattiesburg.
All totaled, the Eagles will have nine home dates and hit the road for 11 matches.
"We are looking forward to this season's schedule," Ebke said. "We challenge ourselves with quality non-conference opponents to prepare us for our tough conference schedule. With 18 players returning with game experience, we look to improve on last season's record."
