Golden Eagle Softball Team Drops Suspended Game, 4-2

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - Marshall scored two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to take a 4-2 win over Southern Miss Saturday in a suspended game in winning the series.
When the game stopped, Southern Miss was leading 1-0. The Golden Eagles left nine runners stranded in the game.
Southern Miss got on the board first in the top of the third when Jill Mathis doubled to right center with one out and advanced to third on a single by Michelle Takeda. Mathis scored on a sacrifice fly by Chanell Thurman.
Marshall put two runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Melanie Stoehr drew a walk and moved to second when Ashley Gue beat out a bunt single. Both runners moved up a base on Morgan Cottrell's sac bunt and came around to score on a Golden Eagle error to take a 2-1 lead.
Southern Miss had a chance to put runs on the board when Mathis and Takeda reached base on back-to-back errors by the Herd that allowed runners to get to third and second, but Marshall was able to get the final out of the inning before the Eagles could do any damage.
The Herd extended their lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth when Gamby drew a leadoff walk and Alysia Hively hit a two-run homer.
Southern Miss scored its final run with two outs when Mathis hit her eight homer of the season to get within 4-2.
USM's starter Courtney Ramos (3-9) took the loss for the Eagles surrendering four runs on five hits, but only two were earned. Natalee Pulver (8-13) got the win in relief, pitching 6.1 innings in giving up two runs on five hits with three strike outs.
