FULLERTON, Calif. - The Southern Miss softball team collected only two hits in losing to No. 16/14 Stanford, 5-0.
Beth Dietrich (3-4) took the loss for the Golden Eagles while Ashley Chinn (7-0) earned the win for the Cardinal as she struck out nine batters.
Jill Mathis reached base in the opening inning courtesy of a Stanford error, but Chinn to Christina Roosmalen to pop out to third.
Stanford put two runs on the board in the home half as the Cardinal got back-to-back singles then Miller doubled to left to plate both runners.
The Cardinal added a run in the bottom of the first with two out as Sarah Hassman got in infield single then stole second. Ashley Hansen walked a Rich had a RBI base hit.
Stanford scored its final two runs on the in the third when Teagan Gerhart was hit by a pitch and Alix Van Zandt homered.
Dietrich allowed only two more hits for the rest of the game.
Brittany Lilly got the Eagles' first hit in the third on a bunt single and Michelle Takeda collected a single in the fourth. Southern Miss left five runners stranded.
The Golden Eagles will face Northwestern at 3:30 p.m., central.
