Golden Eagle Softball Falls 10-2 at South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. - The Golden Eagles collected their first hits in the top of the fifth inning in breaking up a no-hit shutout and scored two runs in the process.
Southern Miss dropped to 10-21 while South Alabama improved to 25-6.
South Alabama scored six runs with two outs in the home half of the first when Jenny Stevens led off with a double to left and moved to third on a sac bunt. Brittany Fowler drew a walk. With two outs, Christin Crocker single off of Ramos leg allowed Stevens to score and Fowler to move to third. Crocker then stole second before Julie Moss single just off the edge of the dirt sent Fowler and Crocker home. Katy Neal drew a walk. Meghan Collins base hit up the middle scored Moss. The Jaguars capped off their scoring when Haley Richards' double plated Neal and Collins.
Gabby Luciani (2-3) who replaced starter Courtney Ramos (1-6) pitched 2.1 innings in getting the final out of the inning. Ramos took the loss as she lasted only 0.2 innings. Taylor Brown pitched the final 1.0 innings.
The Jaguars added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth when Fowler reached on an error and moved to second when Hopkins walked. Crocker then blasted a three run home run over left. South Alabama concluded its scoring with a solo home run by Neal.
Southern Miss finally got on the board in the top of the fifth. Courtney Hill recorded her first hit of the season with a single up the middle. Chanell Thurman followed with a single down the left field line. Hill and pinch runner Stephanie Shiflet came around to score off a Mackenzie Sher double to right.
Hannah Campbell (10-3) went the distance in earning the win.
Southern Miss returns home to host East Carolina in a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single tilt on Sunday at 11 a.m.
