Golden Eagle Softball Splits With Jackson State

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Sophomore Beth Dietrich allowed only two hits in recording a 2-0 win in a complete game shutout in the second game of the doubleheader Wednesday night. The Golden Eagles fell 4-2 in the first game.
In the first game, the Jackson State took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Wendi Reed blasted a two-out home run.
The Golden Eagles got the run back in the home half of the inning when Taylor Brown singled and scored when JSU's left fielder misplayed a hard hit ball by Leslie LeJune in left field.
The Golden Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth when Brown led off with a triple to center. LeJune reached on a catcher's interference. Brown was able to score off a Jill Mathis fielder's choice after being caught in a run down, but scored on an errand throw from the catcher.
Courtney Ramos came in relief of Gabby Luciani in the top of the sixth and gave up one hit. In the bottom of the sixth, the Golden Eagles got a base hit from Danielle LaPointe.
With one out in the top of the seventh, Tynetta Sims drew a walk and scored when Arianna Smith doubled to right center. Smith advanced to third on the throw. After an out, LeEthel Guillory singled down first base line to score Smith. JSU added its final run with a Breea Jamerson's RBI double to right.
Ramos (1-5) took the loss for the Golden Eagles, giving up three runs on three hits in 1.2 innings of work, while Jamerson (6-7) earned the win in giving up two runs on four hits.
Brown led the Eagles offensively with a 3-for-3 performance including a triple. Southern Miss stranded nine runners.
In game two, Southern Miss struck early with a run in the bottom of the second. With two outs, LeJune doubled to center and moved to third on an illegal pitch and scored on Chanell Thurman's single up the middle.
The Golden Eagles added a run in the fourth when Jill Mathis led off the frame with a base hit and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brittany Lilly. Thurman ripped an RBI double with two outs to left center in sending Mathis home.
Dietrich (5-8) got the win as she did not allow a hit after the fourth inning. She had three strikeouts and three walks. Breea Jamerson took the loss, giving up an earned run on two hits in 2.0 innings of work. LeEthel Guillory came in relief and worked the final 4.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits.
Thurman paced the Golden Eagles with a 2-for-2 performance with two RBI, while Mathis, Brown and LeJune each added a hit.
Southern Miss (10-17, 0-3) will continue its homestand with league play this weekend when the Golden Eagles play host to Houston in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday. The teams will meet in a single game Sunday at 11 a.m. at the USM Softball Complex.
