UAB Takes Game Two of Doubleheader, 6-1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Golden Eagle softball team dropped the second game of a double-header, 6-1, to UAB Saturday in Conference USA action.
The fell to 9-15 and 0-2 while UAB improved to 19-8 and 5-0. The teams will face each other in the final game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
Southern Miss missed an opportunity to put a run on the board in the top of the third as Brittany Lilly walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. Courtney Hill drew a walk as Lilly got to third on another wild pitch with only one out. Taylor Brown reached on a fielder's choice, but Lilly got caught in a rundown between third and home for the second out. Hill advanced to third and Brown got to second. Streetman then got Michelle Takeda to pop out to second to end the threat.
UAB took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the inning when Catherine Douglass led off with a single. Kayla Orr was able to beat out a reached on a fielder's choice. Kate Armstrong's sac bunt placed both runners in scoring position for Mandy Lowman's ground out RBI to short. Lauren Webster's bloop-single to right scored Orr.
The Eagles opened the fourth with a Mathis single, but the Blazers got out of the inning without giving up another hit.
UAB added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth with one out when Sallie Van Kirk singled followed by two more infield singles to load the bases. Orr drew a bases loaded walk to push a run across. Armstrong then doubled down the left field line to plate Douglass and Caley Walden. The final run came on a Lowman's ground out to second.
The Golden Eagles finally put a run on the board in the top of the sixth. Amber Torres, who came in relief of Leigh Streetman, gave up a leadoff single to Brown. With one out, Mathis lined a hit into left and advanced to second on the throw as Brown got all the way to third and then scored on Christina Roosmalen base hit to right.
Courtney Raymos (1-4) took the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits. Mathis, Brown and Rossmalen accounted for the Eagles' hits.
Streetman (5-3) got the win, surrendering only two hits and no runs and striking out three. Douglass and Van Kirk had thee and two hits, respectively, in the game.
