BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Southern Miss softball team dropped its conference opener, 3-1, to UAB in the first game of a double-header.
Beth Dietrich (4-7) took the loss giving up only four hits and three runs, while Alisha Smith earned the win (4-1), pitching 5.0 innings allowing only one hit with four strikeouts.
The game started out as a pitchers' duel as both pitchers limited runners on the bases through the first four innings.
Southern Miss got on the board first in the visitor half of the fourth when Taylor Brown led off the inning with a single to right and moved to second on a sacrifice. After a deep fly to right, Brown moved to third and scored on a UAB error.
UAB put two runs on the board in the home half of the fifth with two outs. Caley Walden lined a hit into left and moved to second when Catherine Douglass drew a walk. Kayla Orr then delivered double to right center that plated both runners.
The Blazers added another run in the bottom of the sixth, again, with two outs. Lowman led off with a single up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice. After a ground out to third, Natalie Mitchell double down the left field line to score Lowman.
Lauren Webster, who came in relief of Smith, gave up a leadoff double to Jill Mathis in the top of the seventh, but she then, retired final three batters to record the save.
