HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team returned to shorts and helmets for the second day of spring training here Wednesday afternoon and Golden Eagle coach Larry Fedora has been happy with the progression of his team over the first two practices.
"The guys are excited to be back out there on the field," said Fedora. "It has been a lot of fun over the first couple of days. We are in shorts and you are supposed to look good in shorts, so we will see in a couple of days (when we put the pads on)."
The Golden Eagles worked under sunny skies on the Joe P. Park practices fields for over 2 ½ hours.
Fedora said that this is the time where players try to shine and be noticed by their respective coaches so that they can find a role on the field for next season.
"Guys are excited because they have an opportunity to win a position," said Fedora. "They have an opportunity to show the improvement that they have made since the season ended where they are now. You also have freshmen that have redshirted who are anxious to get out there and get on the field. When you redshirt for a year it gets old and they now that this is their time to show what they have got."
Southern Miss will work two more times this week, Friday and Saturday, as they work through their allotted 15 practice days this spring. The annual Black and Gold Spring Game is set for April 9 at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
