Football Starts Spring Drills Monday Afternoon

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team begins the first of 15 spring practices Monday afternoon at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility.
The Golden Eagles, which finished 8-5 last season and captured its school-record tying 17th consecutive winning season, practices four times this week and then will hold three workout sessions in each of the next three weeks.
The annual Black and Gold Spring Game will take place Saturday, April 9, at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
The Golden Eagles will also take two of its practices on the road as they will travel to Biloxi (Miss.) High School, Friday, March 25, for a workout and Friday, April 1, to Pearl (Miss.) High School for another.
The program welcomes three new full-time coaches to the staff as new defensive coordinator Dan Disch will begin his installation of the new defensive schemes, while Walt Bell and Robert Matthews begins on the offensive side.
Disch comes to Southern Miss after spending the last six seasons at Illinois. Bell, who was an offensive graduate assistant last year, will oversee the wide receivers, while Matthews, who served as an administrative assistant, will coach the tight ends and assist with the offensive line.
Southern Miss looks to return eight starters on offense and seven on defensive when they lineup to start the 2011 campaign against Louisiana Tech Sept. 3.
Spring practice will conclude with a Monday, April 11, practice.
