Golden Eagles Softball Falls Short in 11-10 Game

AUBURN, Ala. - The Southern Miss softball team opened the Tiger Invitational falling 11-10 to Campbell Friday morning in a two-hour-59 minute game.
The teams combined for 21 runs and 23 hits.
Courtney Ramos (1-2) who started the game took the loss after pitching 2.1 innings. Campbell's Christina Melton earned the win, taking over for Lauren Stephan. Southern Miss had to go to its bullpen early as four Golden Eagle pitchers saw action.
Campbell put runs on the board in the first three innings in taking a 5-0 lead. Southern Miss got a run back in the bottom when Leslie LeJune and Stephanie Shiflet posted back-to-back singles to start the inning. Both runners moved up a base on a double-steal. With two outs, Britney Dinelt drew a walk and LeJune scored off a Christina Roosmalen's fielder's choice.
After Campbell put two more runs on the board in the top of the fourth, the Golden Eagles came right back to cut the lead to 7-6 after scoring five runs in the home half of the inning. Chanell Thurman was hit by a pitch to get the first runner on the base. Taylor Brown singled to move the runner to second. The Eagles loaded the bases when Shiflet beat out a bunt. Michelle Takeda walked to push a run across. With two outs, Dinelt singled to plate Shiflet, and Roosmalen singled through the right side to push another run across. Pinch hitter Danielle LaPointe then delivered a two-RBI single to right to score Mathis and Dinelt.
The Golden Eagles got into trouble again as the Fighting Camels put up four runs on the board in taking an 11-6 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Takeda reached on an error, before Mathis launched a towering home run that cleared the scoreboard in left field.
Gabby Luciani, who entered the game in relief of Taylor Brown, kept gave up only two hits in the final 2.1 innings. The Golden Eagles added their final two runs in the bottom of the seventh when Shiflet singled up the middle, before Mathis hammered her second home run of the game with a shot over centerfield.
Southern Miss is back in action, playing host Auburn at 12:30 p.m., game.
