Notes Heading into the East Carolina Game
- The Golden Eagles are enjoying their second week in the national rankings with a No. 24 spot in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Southern Miss debuted last week at No. 25. It was their first national ranking since Nov. 2, 2004. USM also earned its first Top 25 Bowl Championship ranking since 2004 last Sunday wtih a No. 25 showing.
- Southern Miss captured its sixth consecutive victory - its longest winning streak since capturing eight-straight during the last fi ve games of 2008 and the first three tilts of 2009 - with a 31-13 triumph over UTEP to improve to 7-1 on the season, giving them their best start since 1996.
- The win clinched the school's 18th winning season, a record at Southern Miss.
- Southern Miss fi nished undefeated in the month of October for the first time since the 2000 campaign when that squad won three contests that season.
- The win over UTEP also marked the first time since Conference USA went to divisional play in 2005 that Southern Miss won all three games against West Division opponents during the regular season.
- It was the first time this season the Golden Eagles were tied at the half notched in a 10-10 at intermission. Southern Miss scored 21 points in the second half to pull away in the contest.
- The Golden Eagle defense has allowed just a touchdown and three field goals over the last two games.
- Southern Miss is 80-33 all-time and 39-18 on the road in Conference USA games.
The East Carolina Series
- Southern Miss and East Carolina meet for the 37th time with the Golden Eagles holding a 26-10 advantage in the series (see page 5 of notes for breakdown of the series).
- The Golden Eagles have had tremendous success in Greenville, winning 15 of 18 meetings there, but dropped the last contest there 25-20 in 2009 which snapped a seven-game winning streak there.
- The Golden Eagles are 12-4 against the Pirates when they meet in the month of November.
- Southern Miss plays a hot Pirate squad that has won three-straight games.
- The Golden Eagles are 10-4 against ECU in Conference USA games.
- The Pirates won last year's meeting in Hattiesburg, 44-43.
