HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Following a close 30-29 home victory over Conference USA East Division rival UCF Saturday night, Southern Miss was rewarded this morning by moving three places in both major college football polls.
The Golden Eagles, 9-1 and winners of their last eight contests, jumped to No. 20 in the USA Today Coaches' Poll, while advancing to No. 22 in the Associated Press poll.
Southern Miss has now been in the coaches' poll for three weeks, while they have held a standing in the AP poll for the last two.
The No. 20 ranking in the USA Today poll is the highest for Southern Miss since a No. 20 spot on Nov. 12, 2000, while the No. 22 AP place is the best showing in that poll since a No. 21 ranking on Nov. 2, 2004.
Southern Miss returns to action this Thursday when they travel to Birmingham, Ala., to take on C-USA foe UAB in a 7 p.m., contest at historic Legion Field.
