Volleyball Eagles Sweep UAB, 3-0

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Southern Miss volleyball team swept UAB in three sets 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-16) to improve to 14-14 overall and 8-8 in conference USA play.
Ashley Mell led all players with 13 kills and Lauren Sears chipped in 10 on .364 hitting for Southern Miss. Lisa Knecht tallied 23 digs with Amelia Hendrickson, Kelsea Seymour and Elizabeth Rinaudo picking up 10 digs apiece. Seymour also handed out 43 assists to record a double-double.
Sam Serley led the Blazers (20-8, 10-6) with nine kills. Alison Woods recorded 22 while Heather Thomas led the team with 19 digs.
UAB popped out to a 3-1 lead before Southern Miss used an 8-2 run in taking a 9-5 lead. Following a UAB timeout, the teams played evenly as UAB fought back to get within 19-16 before the Eagles called a timeout. USM extended its lead to 21-17 before UAB used its second timeout. Southern Miss closed out the set with a 4-2 run for a 25-19 win.
The two teams opened the second stanza with even play. With the set tied at 9-9, the Golden Eagles scored six of the next eight points for a 15-11 lead. UAB battled back in closing the gap to 19-17. After a USM timeout, a USM error made the score 19-18. Sears added a kill for USM followed by a kill and block from Sarah Jane Bowden helped put the Eagles up 22-19. Southern Miss held on for the 25-20 win.
Southern Miss fell behind early in the third set 4-2 before using an 11-5 run to take a 13-9 lead. The Golden Eagles would not let up as UAB called its final timeout trailing 17-13. From there, Southern Miss finished the set with an 8-3 run for a 25-16 win.
Southern Miss is back in action at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Memphis in closing out the road portion of its schedule.
