Golden Eagles Play Final Non-Conference Road Tilt of Campaign
- The Golden Eagles play their final non-conference road game this week when they travel to state of Maryland for the first time to face Navy in the two schools first meeting in football.
- Southern Miss has won its last two non-conference regular season games, including a win against ACC opponent Virginia, 30-24, on Sept. 24.
- The Golden Eagles are 3-4 under Larry Fedora in road non-conference, regular season tilts.
- The game will be the first for the Golden Eagles against a Division I independent since they met USF in a Oct. 12, 2002 contest, in which the Bulls won 16-13.
The Navy Series
- This will be the first meeting between the schools.
- USM is 3-0 all-time against the Service Academies, holding a 3-0 record against Army. The Golden Eagles have not played Air Force in football.
- The program did face the All-Navy Service team on Oct. 15, 1925, in which the Golden Eagles lost 32-6 in a game that was played in Pensacola, Fla.
Notes from Rice Contest
- The Golden Eagles rolled up a school-record 654 yards in defeating Rice 48-24 to give the Golden Eagles their first Conference USA victory. It was the sixth time in the Fedora era that the Golden Eagles racked up at least 600 yards of total offense.
- It was also the sixth time USM has gone over 300 yards rushing over the last threeplus seasons, spanning 44 games and have won all six of those contests.
- In what proved to be a weird contest, there were three total fumble returns for touchdowns as Rice scored on two of them. It was the first time a team returned two fumbles in a contest for a score in a USM contest since Roy Magee returned a blocked field goal and Adalius Thomas returned a 64-yard fumble for a score for the Golden Eagles against Northwestern State (9/11/99). It also marked the first time that each school registered one fumble return in a game since Oct. 4, 1997, in a tilt against Louisville.
- The Golden Eagle defense notched its fourth-straight contest in which they collected multiple turnovers.
