Volleyball Eagles Fall 3-1 to Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - Three Golden Eagles posted double figure kills, led by senior Ashley Mell with a match-high 20 kills, but it wasn't enough as Southern Miss fell to Marshall 3-1 (30-28, 20-25, 20-25, 20-25) in Conference USA action Friday night.
Halie Ecker and Lauren Sears tallied 12 and 11 kills, respectively, while Amelia Hendrickson recorded a career-high 33 digs. Lisa Knecht and Kelsea Seymour added 15 digs apiece and Mell had 11.
Abby Tomas led Marshall with 16 kills while Sacha Byous-McConnell had 14 and Cameron Yoho added 12. Sammie Bane led the team with 22 digs.
Marshall out-hit, out-dug and out-blocked the Eagles. The Herd had 59 kills on a .173 hitting clip, had 95 digs and registered 17.0 team blocks. Southern Miss finished the match with 58 kills on .132 hitting, 88 digs and 5.0 team blocks.
It took a few extra points for Southern Miss to defeat Marshall in the first set by a score of 30-28. The two teams battled from start to finish as neither team managed to gain any more than four-point lead.
The second set was just as close as both teams battled back and forth. Marshall scored six of the final seven points to end the second set with a 25-20 win.
Marshall grabbed the early in the third set and was able to maintain the lead for the set for the 25-20 win.
The fourth set featured eight ties and four lead changes. Marshall jumped out to a 3-0 lead but the Eagles battled back to tie the set. The Herd moved ahead 14-11 forcing the Eagles to take a timeout. Southern Miss cut the lead to 16-15 but Marshall got two points off Eagles errors to maintain its lead. The Herd closed out the set with a 9-5 run to seal the win.
Southern Miss travels to East Carolina for a Sunday match against the Pirates at 1 p.m. central.
