HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team completed the installation of its game plan for this weekend's contest at Louisiana Tech with a two and a half hour practice at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility Tuesday afternoon.
Kickoff for the game is set for 6 p.m., Saturday, in Ruston, La., and can be seen on the internet at ESPN3.com or heard on one of the affiliates of the Southern Miss ISP Sports Network.
The Golden Eagles honed the game plan in all three phases during their Tuesday workout. The team will get one more day to polish what they plan to run against the Bulldogs in its Thursday practice.
Third-year coach Larry Fedora, who has posted a 16-13 record at the helm of the program, said the team has been working on putting pressure on the Bulldog quarterbacks and the challenges that they will be presented in doing that this weekend.
"Their pass protection is more like a punt coverage," said Fedora. "They just kind of drop back and take it as (the play) unfolds. (Bulldog quarterbacks) get the ball out pretty quick. That is the difficult thing when you try to do that. Hopefully, we can get some pressure on them."
The Bulldogs also are known for running a bunch of formations and the Golden Eagles are trying to counteract them with some packages of their own on defense.
"They have been around 20 plays a game in which they have been in empty (backfield formation)," said Fedora. "So we have to have an empty package going into the game and have a good plan for it. We will probably do two to three things against it."
Southern Miss has sold its allotment of tickets for the game this weekend, but plenty still are available for the game by calling the Louisiana Tech Ticket Office at (318) 257-3631.
