Softball Splits on Saturday

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss softball team went 1-1 Saturday in a doubleheader against Nicholls State, winning the first game, 9-1, while dropping the second contest, 7-4.
Junior Stephanie Shiflet led Southern Miss going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Newcomer Michelle Takeda was 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and two RBI. Britney Dinelt and Mackenzie Sher recorded two hits apiece.
Southern Miss put eight runs on the board in the first inning as the Golden Eagles batted around.
Courtney Ramos worked 4.0 innings giving up one run and striking out five batters. Freshman Kelly Smith pitched the final three innings allowing just one hit and on runs. The Golden Eagles tallied 13 hits in the first game.
In the second game, seven different players recorded a hit as the Golden Eagles' suffered a 7-4 loss to Colonels. Nicholls State scored five runs in the first inning courtesy of five hits and two costly Eagle errors. Southern Miss got a run back in the home half of the inning when Courtney Hill reached base on an error, eventually scoring on Nicholls' second error of the inning.
Southern Miss scored another run in the second and the final two in the fifth.
Sophomore Gabby Luciani started the game, but lasted only 0.1 innings. Beth Detrich come on in relief and worked 4.2 innings allowing two hits and two runs. Smith pitched the final two innings, giving up two hits but no runs.
Southern Miss will play two games next Saturday against Southeastern Louisiana and William Carey before concluding the fall season at the College Classic in Spring, Texas, Oct. 2-3.
