HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team returned to practice with a two-plus hour workout at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility here Saturday night, a day after going through its second scrimmage of the summer camp.
Third-year coach Larry Fedora said following practice that the team still needs improvement but likes his team's approach heading into its season opener at South Carolina, Sept. 2.
"We still have a ways to go, I can assure you of that," Fedora said. "We are going to need every second of every day that we have, but the guys are working hard and you can see the sense of urgency today. They understand that it is going to be here very soon and I like their attitudes."
Fedora also expressed surprise of the Gamecocks being excluded in the preseason Associated Press Top 25, which was released earlier in the day.
"I'm surprised they aren't in the Top 25," Fedora added. "They definitely have Top 25 caliber talent and they get there at some point in the season."
In addition, Fedora announced that five Southern Miss players were involved in a two-car accident at around 2 p.m., today, heading to practice, but stressed that all of the players were fine.
All five Golden Eagles were taken to Wesley Medical Center for evaluation and then returned to practice during the afternoon session. The names of the players were withheld due to privacy laws.
The Golden Eagles return to the practice field Sunday afternoon.
