HATTIESBURG, Miss. -
The Southern Miss Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) experienced great success in the 2009-2010 academic year; a year in which they participated in a number of community outreach programs, as well as several fundraising events for area non-profit organizations, such as the Homes of Hope for Children and the South Central Mississippi Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is committed to making a difference. As a result of their hard work and contribution to our community, our SAAC was awarded the 2009-2010 Conference-USA Community Outreach Cup. Some of their contributions include:
-
- Approximately $500 in coins collected for the "Spare Change, Spare the Children" campaign
- Collected 7,202 lbs of canned goods for the "Let's SAAC Hunger" campaign
- Raised $1,000 for the American Red Cross by sponsoring the first annual "Cross My Heart, Hope to Buy" Charity Date Auction
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is an integral part of Southern Miss athletics. Each head coach selects two student-athletes from their respective team to serve on this leadership committee. The student-athletes who serve are committed to these functions:
-
- Promote communication and between student-athletes and Southern Miss athletics administrators
- Provide feedback and insight into department issues, team concerns, etc.
- Provide a student-athlete voice within the Southern Miss athletic department and the formulation of policies
- Foster a sense of community among all Southern Miss athletics teams
- Solicit student-athlete responses to proposed C-USA and NCAA legislation
- Organize and implement community outreach events
- Create a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees (e.g. Student Government Association, etc.)
- Promote a positive student-athlete image on the Southern Miss campus
As we anticipate a new year, SAAC meets it with great excitement about the opportunities that lie ahead. The Southern Miss SAAC is eager to continue making a positive impact on their teams, the Southern Miss' campus, Hattiesburg and surrounding areas, as well as the national level.
