Softball Splits Doubleheader Against UAB

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - - The Southern Miss softball team split a Conference USA doubleheader with UAB Saturday. The Eagles dropped the first game 7-1, but bounced back to take the second game by a score of 3-0.
In the opening game, UAB's Lauren Webster (17-5) scattered seven hits over seven innings of work against the Eagles to pick up the win.
UAB got on the scoreboard in the opening frame when Martina Landrum led off with a single and promptly stole second. She moved to third on a deep fly by Cameron Skates and came around to score on a Golden Eagle error.
The Eagles had a chance to score in the bottom of the inning when Megan Hill walked and advanced to second on a Jill Mathis infield single. Logan James flew out to center to end the inning.
UAB tacked on two more runs in the top of the third when Skates singled and moved to second when Mandy Lowman drew a walk. Skates scored off a Kayla Orr double. Lowman then scored when Webster singled to short to give the Blazers a 3-0. Beth Dietrich came in relief of Gabby Luciani to retire the final out.
The Blazers added a run each in the fourth and fifth innings, giving UAB a 5-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles finally got on the board in the home half of the fifth as Hill led of the inning with a solo home run over the left field fence for the 11th round-tripper of the season.
UAB concluded its scoring with two run in the visitor half of the sixth to secure the 7-1 win.
Luciani (10-11) took the loss for the Eagles lasting 2.2 innings giving up five hits and three runs, but only two were earned.
All four seniors recorded a hit in the game.
In game two, the teams played through five scoreless innings before Southern Miss took advantage of two walks and two hits to put up three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Leslie LeJune walked and took second on Britney Dinelt's ground out to second. Hill drew a walk and Jill Mathis hit a three-run homer over left center. James added another hit in the before Amber Torres retired the final two batters.
Courtney Ramos (9-10) got the complete game shutout win, scattering three hits while fanning seven. Mathis was 2-for-3 with a run and three RBIs to lead the Eagles' offensively.
Torres (6-3) took the loss, giving up three runs, all earned, on four hits and striking out one in six innings.
Southern Miss (25-26, 7-16) and UAB (35-19, 14-9) will meet in the rubber game Sunday at 1 p.m. Five seniors (Brandi Alonzo, Lauren Castellvi, Megan Hill, Logan James and Lana Vaughn) will be honored in a postgame ceremony at the conclusion of the game.
