Softball Hosts Northwestern State in a Mid-week Doubleheader

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss softball team heads into the final week of regular season play, beginning a five-game homestand by hosting Northwestern State in a non-conference mid-week doubleheader Wednesday. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
The Golden Eagles are coming off a 5-0 loss at East Carolina in Conference USA action Sunday. Prior to the weekend, Southern Miss had won four-straight games. The Eagles are 22-25 overall.
Junior Jill Mathis leads the Eagles, offensively, in batting with a .309 average on 46 hits, while senior Megan Hill is next at .296 with a team-leading eight home runs and 29 RBI. Britney Dinelt and Leslie LeJune are batting .281 and .280, respectively. LeJune has 46 hits.
The Golden Eagle pitching staff has a 2.97 ERA with a combined 257 strikeouts. Freshman Gabby Luciani is 10-10 on the year and owns a team-low 2.20 ERA in 159.1 innings of work and 151 strikeouts. Sophomore Courtney Ramos is 7-10 with a 3.95 ERA in 110.0 innings of work.
Northwestern State comes into the doubleheader winning three of their five games, led sophomore Samantha Roberts, who boasts team highs in batting average (.339), home runs (5), and RBI (33). Taywanee Edmonds and Kayla Cole are the only other Lady Demons to bat better than .300 at .318 and .317, respectively.
Southern Miss leads the all-time series 14-11 over the Lady Demons, most recently with a doubleheader sweep in Hattiesburg last season, 8-3 and 2-1.
The Golden Eagles close out the regular season with a three-game C-USA series against UAB. First pitch is set for 1 p.m., in the doubleheader on Saturday. The Sunday's game is scheduled for 1 p.m., and five seniors will be recognized in a postgame ceremony.
