HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss head softball coach Howard Dobson announced the signing of pitcher Kelly Smith (Friendswood, Texas) to a national letter of intent and grant-in-aid agreement for the 2010-11 season.
Smith pitched and played first base for Coach Kevin Parr at Friendswood High School where she holds the single season strikeout record with 307 Ks in addition to owning the all-time record in career strikeouts with 609, passing former Friendswood standout Kirstie Curry. Smith has at least four games remaining in the current season as the team advanced to the playoffs.
Smith earned second team all-district and all-county honors as a junior and named her team's best defensive player. She currently plays travel ball with the Texas Storm 18 Gold for Coach Carla Newsom. She is the daughter of Bob and Deb Smith.
