Softball Drops Game One of Series Opener, 4-0

GREENVILLE, N. C. - The Golden Eagle softball team lost the opening game of the C-USA series by a 4-0 score to East Carolina.
Southern Miss falls to 22-23 overall and 6-13 in league play while East Carolina maintained a half-game lead over Tulsa as the Pirates improved to 32-16 and 11-5.
Gabby Luciani (10-9) got the loss for the Eagles, giving up four runs but only one was earned. Toni Paisley earned the win in the one-hit shutout, her 15th of the season.
East Carolina got on the board first in the home half of the second when Vanessa Moreno led off with a solo home run over the left field fence. Luciani then retired four of the next three batters to end the inning.
The Golden Eagles threaten in the top of the four when Megan Hill drew her 46th walk and moved to second on a base hit by Jill Mathis. Alexis Hurley then put down a sacrifice bunt, moving both runners to third and second. Paisley then got a strike out and pop-out to get out of the inning.
ECU added the more runs in the bottom of the sixth with one out when Moreno reached on an infield single and moved to second on a base hit by Nicole Jordan. Cristen Aona then put down a sac bunt, but the Eagles committed the error on the play and Moreno came around to score and Jordan moved to third. Aona then stole second before Kai Clark reached base on a bunt single and that allowed Jordan scored on the play and Aona moved to third. Clark stole second, but on the throw down Aona scored for the third run of the inning.
Paisley then retired the final three Golden Eagles batters in order to end the game
