Golden Eagles Lose in Extra Innings, 9-8

EL PASO, Texas - UTEP scored a run in the bottom of the eighth on a walk-off base on balls to give the Miners an 9-8 win in extra innings.
Freshman Beth Dietrich (3-4) who came on in relief got the loss after surrendering two runs on six hits while Stacie Townsend (21-7) earned the win after pitching the final four innings.
Two teams battled through the first three innings of scoreless softball until the Southern Miss put three runs on the board in the top of the fourth. Brandi Alonzo was hit by a pitch followed by a walk by Leslie LeJune. Britney Dinelt then hit a hard liner that tipped off the first baseman's glove to load the bases. Megan Hill then singled down the left field line to score Alonzo. Logan James with a two-RBI single to left. Christina Roosmalen singled to center to load the bases again. The Miners then turned a double play to get out of the inning.
UTEP answered in a big way in the bottom half of the frame as the Miners put seven runs on the board with two outs. UTEP got back-to-back walks to start the rally. Kelynn Frye beat out an infield single to load the bases. Kia Moore then hit a ground-rule double to score two runs. Chelsea Troupe than hit a three-run home run to center to give UTEP a 5-3 lead. Stacie Townsend drew a walk before Camilla Carrera homered to left center, putting the Miners up 7-3.
Southern Miss fought back to cut the lead to 7-5 in the top of the fifth. Lauren Castellvi led off the inning with a singled to right. Alonzo singled to left to put runners at first and second. With two outs, Dinelt singled to right and advanced to second on the throw while Castellvi scored. Hill then walked to load the bases before James delivered an RBI single to score Alonzo.
Dietrich who came on to pitch for the Eagles in the fourth inning allowed one hit before retiring the side.
Southern Miss started the sixth inning with Danielle LaPointe reaching base with a walk. Thurman was hit by a pitch. With two outs, LeJune drew a walk to load the bases for the Eagles. Dinelt then struck out but reached first on a pass ball, allowing pinch runner Perry to score. Hill singled in two more turns to give Southern Miss an 8-7 lead.
In the seventh, both teams put a runner on but were unable to push a run across and sent the game into extra innings.
With one out, LeJune singled to short but Townsend got Dinelt to fly out to left and got Hill looking to end the inning. The Golden Eagles left 16 runners on base.
UTEP got back-to-back singles and two consecutive walks in the bottom of the eighth to take get the win, 8-7.
Both teams return to action Saturday for the final game of the series with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. (MT).
