HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss women's basketball coach Joye Lee-McNelis announced the signing of wing player Brittany Weathers of Hattiesburg, Miss., to a letter-of-intent for the 2010-11 season.
Weathers, comes to Southern Miss after playing the last two seasons at Pearl River Community College, where she averaged 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists per contest. She played her prep basketball at Oak Grove High School. During her high school career, Weathers was an all-state performer for coach Amy Mitchell, where she averaged 25 points, nine rebounds and six assists a contest.
"I am excited to have a hometown girl be a part of our program," McNelis said. "We watched Brittany grow as a person and as a basketball player at Oak Grove High School. Brittany is a player that brings us excellent versatility and we expect her to play at the No. 3 or 4 spot because she has the ability to score from the perimeter as well as the ability to finish around the basket. We are excited about Brittany joining the Lady Eagle program."
Brittany's junior college coach Toby Bush echoed Coach McNelis' sentiments on the 6-foot player.
"Brittany is a tremendous talent," Bush said. "She can do it all. She can score inside and outside and has a great 3-point touch. She can handle the ball and take people off the dribble. She is the prototype when you think of a basketball player. I'm sure she will be as productive with Southern Miss as she was with us. Coach McNelis got a good one."
While at Oak Grove, Weathers was a teammate of former Lady Eagle Whitney McNelis and current Lady Eagle assistant coach Jordan Dupuy was an assistant coach at Oak Grove.
"I chose Southern Miss because I felt comfortable with the school," Weather said. "It's home and I've known Coach McNelis and Coach Dupuy for a while. They made it easy for me. I want to come in and play right away. I know I have to work hard, but I want to do whatever I can to help us win."
Weathers is the seventh signee this year and joins five early signees during the early signing period which includes Janairrika Bland (6-3, C, Edwards, Miss.), Jamierra Faulkner (5-6, PG, West Palm Beach, Fla.), Tiara George (6-1, F, Baton Rouge, La.), Niesha Pierce (5-10, G, Gulfport, Miss.), and Nitesha Pierce (5-10, F, Gulfport, Miss.), along with Tandrea High (5-6, G, Jonesboro, Ga.).
