Golden Eagle Softball Team Hosts Marshall In Three-Game Series

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Golden Eagles head into the weekend facing Marshall in a three-game home conference series. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m., and a single game on Sunday at 12 p.m. The Sunday game will be nationally televised on CBS C.
Southern Miss comes into the game with an 18-22 record overall and 3-12 in league play. Senior outfielder Megan Hill leads the team offensively with a batting average of .320 followed by Jill Mathis at .310. Hill leads the team with 29 RBIs and eight home runs. Leslie LeJune leads the team with 41 hits and 32 runs scored, while Mathis is right behind at 39 hits. The Golden Eagle pitching staff has a team ERA of 3.15 with a combined 236 strikeouts. Freshman Gabby Luciani owns a team-low 2.25 ERA in 136.2 innings with 138 strikeouts and an 8-8 record. Courtney Ramos owns a 6-9 record while working 90.0 innings and 61 strikeouts.
Marshall brings a six-game winning streak into the weekend following a 10-2 win over Dayton in five innings on Sunday. The Herd is 24-22 overall and 3-12 in league play. Jazmine Valle and Caitlyn Jackson pace the Herd offense with a team-best .336 batting average with 42 and 49 hits, respectively, and Rebecca Gamby is right behind at .328. Valle has a team-high 33 RBIs. Marshall's pitching staff owns 3.36 ERA. Katie Murphree has a team-low 2.52 ERA and a 15-12 record in 174.2 innings of work and 163 strike outs. Caitlyn Jackson is 6-9 in 89.1 innings of work with 87 strikeouts and an ERA of 1.72.
Southern Miss and Marshall have played 13 times in a series dating back to 2006. Southern Miss leads the overall series 8-5 against Marshall, including a 3-0 win last season in Huntington.
Following the Marshall series, Southern Miss travels to Southeastern Louisiana for a single contest at 6 p.m., on April 28.
