Southern Miss Softball Falls To UTEP in Game One

EL PASO, Texas - UTEP's Stacie Townsend struck out 15 batters and scattered four hits over seven innings in helping the Miners post a 10-3 win over Southern Miss in game of the a doubleheader Friday.
Townsend (20-7) won her 20th game of the season got the win while Courtney Ramos (6-7) took the loss for the Golden Eagles.
UTEP got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning when Courtney Ware hit a solo home run to left for the Miners.
The Miners added four more runs on the board in the bottom of the third as Kayla Oranger started the inning reaching base and advanced to second on an error and got to third on a wild pitch. Townsend drew a walk to put runners at the corners before Camilla Carrera singled through the right side to score Oranger. Both runners moved up a base on another Golden Eagle error. Ashley Ellis reached base on yet another Eagle error and Townsend scored and Carrera moved to third. Ellis stole second. Carrera and Ellis scored off an error that ended up in right field.
Southern Miss finally got on the scoreboard when Hill drew a walk to start off the inning. Logan James then hit a triple down the right field line that scored Hill from first.
The Eagles added another run in the top of the fifth when LeJune blasted a solo shot over the scoreboard.
The Miners answered right back in the bottom half of the frame as Carrera walked and Chelsea Troupe reached on a fielder's choice as Carrera was out at second. Ellis then doubled to left center to put runners at second and third. Ware reached with a fielder's choice that scored Troupe and Villanueva followed with another fielder's choice to score Ellis.
Southern Miss scored its final run in the top of the sixth when Hill and Mathis earned back-to-back walks. Hill came around to score when James hit to short and pinch runner Kirsten Perry got to third on an errand throw that ended up in the outfield.
The Miners then scored three runs on four hits in the bottom to push their lead to 10-3.
