HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss interim Head Volleyball Coach Abbey Sutherland has announced the signing of Shelby Schacher of Lone Tree, Colo., to national letter of intent and grant-in-aid for the 2010-11 academic year.
"Shelby is a good all-around player and really knows the game," Sutherland said. "She thrives to play in intense situations. I look for her to have a successful career at Southern Miss as well as very competitive in Conference USA."
Schacher, a 5-10 outside hitter, was a three-year letterwinner and starter for Coach Cara Seyers at Arapahoe High School. As a senior, she earned first-team all-state honors becoming the first volleyball player to do so in the school's 45-year history. The three-time all-conference selection helped her team place second in the district tournament, first in the region tournament and fifth in the state tournament.
Schacher tallied 329 kills, 43 aces, 258 digs and 40 blocks during the season as well as leading the team in kills as a sophomore and junior. She was selected to play in the Colorado All-State game and was named MaxPreps Colorado Volleyball Players of the Year 5A first team.
She is currently playing club volleyball with the Colorado Juniors 18-Meghan. She has qualified to play on the US Open of Beach Volleyball in Manhattan Beach, Calif.
Schacher also owns a second degree black belt in Taekwondo and has won three Junior Olympic gold medals. She is the daughter of Jeff and Judy Schacher.
