Tulsa Softball Takes Two From Golden Eagles

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Tulsa posted a 2-0 win over Southern Miss in game one and came back to take game two in a run-rule game, 9-1 in six innings in Conference USA softball action Saturday.
Game One - Tulsa 2, Southern Miss 0
Tulsa's Jackie Lawrence (9-5) scattered four hits and struck out four in 7.0 innings to record the complete game shutout against Eagles, while Gabby Luciani (6-7) took the loss for the Golden Eagles.
The two teams combined to leave eight runners on base through the first three innings.
Tulsa pushed the game's first run across in the top of the fourth inning when Vanessa Vice led off with a walk before Christian Timmons singled to put runners at first and second. Both runners moved up a base as Jessica Stoekle grounded out to short. Lauren Menke had an infield single to score Vice from third and Timmons reached third with only one out. Kelly Chapman then flew out to left, but Timmons was called out for leaving early on an appeal play to end the inning.
Lawrence retired the next the Eagle batters in order in the bottom half of the fourth.
The Golden Hurricane added another run in the top of the fifth when Caitlin Everett singled to start the inning and scored off a Lauren Lindsey double to left center.
Southern Miss collected two hits in the final two innings, but was unable to push a run across.
Game Two - Tulsa 9, Southern Miss 1 (6 innings)
Tulsa scored runs in five of the six innings in defeating Southern Miss 9-1 in a run-rule game. Jordan Kinard (6-6) gave up four hits and an unearned run while striking out five and giving up only one walk to get the win for Hurricane. Southern Miss' starter Courtney Ramos (6-9) took the loss.
The Hurricane scored two runs in the first as Everett reached with a bunt single, then stole second, and scored when Lindsay doubled to right center. Lindsay moved to third when Cobb fouled out to deep right. Ramos struck out Bowen, but Vice singled to center to plate Lindsay.
Tulsa added a run in the second when Menke walked and moved to second on a pass ball. Chapman grounded out to short, but Menke advanced to third on the play and scored when Everett singled.
The Golden Eagles put two runners on in the bottom half of the frame when Christina Roosmalen drew a walk and moved to second when Jill Mathis singled down the left line. Roosmalen got to third on an error allowing Mathis to get to second. Roosmalen scored on a sacrifice fly by Thurman.
Tulsa put three more runs on the board in the fourth when Chapman singled to center and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Everett walked before Lindsay doubled to left to score Chapman and Everett. Lindsay moved to third on a ground out to second and scored on a pass ball.
Southern Miss started the bottom half of the fourth with back-to-back singles by Logan James and Roosmalen. Kincard then retired the next three batters in order to end the threat.
Tulsa added three more runs in the sixth when Everett collected her third hit of the game before Lindsay hit a two-run home run over right field. Cobb then doubled to center and moved to third on a single by Bowen. Cobb scored on a Golden Eagle error. Beth Dietrich came on to pitch for Ramos with a runner on second. Vice walked then Timmons flew out to center. Mickey LaValley singled through the right side to load the bases for Tulsa, but Dietrich struck out pinch hitter Keri Leach and got Skylar Swanson to ground out to second to end the inning.
Kinard then ended the game by retiring the final three batters for Southern Miss.
Both teams return to the field Sunday for a 12 p.m., game in the final game of the series.
