FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Southern Miss softball fell to No. 19 Louisiana-Lafayette, 7-3, in the Razorback Invitational Saturday afternoon.
"Much better day today," Coach Howard Dobson said. "We showed a lot more fight for 14 innings and that's something we didn't do yesterday. We jumped out early against Eastern Illinois. They fought their way back and our kids didn't show any quit as we came back in the seventh inning and scored four runs. Gabby did a good job of figuring out the zone and once she figured it out she settled in, did some good things and made some quality pitches when she had to. She held on long enough for our kids to score some runs. Megan hits the home run and we tack on a few more runs and Gabby closed the door."
Courtney Ramos (5-3) worked 5.0 innings took the loss for the Golden Eagles. Donna Bourgeois (6-4) got the win for the Ragin Cajuns as she pitched a complete game.
"We came back against ULL, a team that is very explosive offensively and probably one of the better offensive teams we will face all year long," Dobson said. "A team like that you're not going to stop them offensively but hope to be able to contain them. Today we stayed on and fought. We have not had the best success against ULL, but today was one of the time we felt us coming. If we can give that same effort all year long, we will give ourselves a shot at winning some games."
ULL (13-6) scored three runs in the bottom of the first on a three-run home run by Christi Orgeron. The Ragin Cajun started the inning with back-to-back singles by Erikka Murphy and Vallie Gaspard. Louisiana added a run in the bottom of the second as the leadoff batter reached on an error then stole second before reaching home on a single and ground out.
Southern Miss (12-5) scored its first run in the top of the third when Lauren Castellvi drew a walk and advanced to second on a bunt single by Stephanie Shiflet. Megan Hill then singled up the middle to score Castellvi from second.
Louisiana scored a run off three hits in the fourth for a 5-1 lead.
Southern Miss scored two runs in the top of the sixth to cut the ULL lead to 5-3. With one out, Megan Hill blasted a solo shot to left that cleared the outside fence of the complex. Jill Mathis followed by a single up the middle. Logan James reached on a fielder's choice and advance to second when Christina Roosmalen drew a walk. Casey Jo Matthews and Kirsten Perry came on to pinch run for James and Roosmalen, respectively. Danielle LaPointe then singled to right field to score Matthews from second.
ULL got the two runs back as in the bottom half of the frame when Gaspard reached on a Golden Eagle error and Orgeron hit a two-run home run, her second of the game.
Southern Miss concludes play Sunday against Arkansas at 1 p.m.
