FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Southern Miss softball team had its four-game winning streak snapped with an 8-2 loss to Drake in the opening game of the Razorback Invitational Friday morning.
Drake (7-3) scored four unearned runs in the top of the seventh in securing the win. Jenna DeLong (4-2) got the win allowing only three hits and two earned runs while USM's Courtney Ramos (5-2) took the loss as the Golden Eagles fell to 11-3 on the year.
Megan Hill became the all-time home run leader with 34, passing Kenya Peters, when she belted her fourth home run of the season.
Drake got on the scoreboard first with one out when the Bulldogs had back-to-back singles by Bridget Shields and Erin Bly. The Golden Eagles came up with a big defensive play after Torey Craddock's hit a ball just out of the reach of Jill Mathis, but Leslie LeJune was able to get the lead runner on the throw. With two out, Erin Mollohan doubled to center to score Bly and Craddock.
Southern Miss scored its first run in the bottom of the third on Hill's solo blast to straight away center.
The Bulldogs added two more runs in the top of the six with two outs when Shields reached first after being hit by a pitch and Bly homered to center to give Drake a 4-1 lead.
Southern Miss got a run back in the bottom half of the frame as Logan James singled to left center and advanced to third on a single Alexis Hurley and an error by the left fielder. Stephanie Shiflet pinch ran for Hurley. James scored on a sacrifice fly by Chanell Thurman.
Drake came back in the top of the seventh to score four runs to put the game out of reach as DeLong retired the Golden Eagles in order.
Southern Miss plays Iowa State today at approximately 2 p.m.
