FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Iowa State used a five-run fourth inning in defeating Southern Miss, 7-1, in the Razorback Invitational Friday afternoon.
Freshman Gabby Luciani (3-1) lost for the first time this season in pitching a complete game, giving up seven runs but only one was earned. Iowa State's Rachel Zabriskie (8-5) scattered five hits and gave up one run.
"We wanted to come out today and tried to build on this weekend on what we did and how we played, but it definitely didn't go our way from the start," Coach Howard Dobson said. "We gave up eight runs and 14 hits and then in the second game we gave up seven runs on 11 hits. When you're pitching is giving up runs and we're not making plays behind them and we can't hit, the outcome is not going to be good. All three parts fell apart today and that you can't have. You can give yourself a chance if you got two of the three parts that are on. If you have only one part or none, then you're not going to win."
Southern Miss put a run on the board first in the bottom half of the second inning when Logan James led off the inning with a single and advance to second on a sacrifice bunt by Christina Roosmalen. James got to third on a pass ball then scored off a Lauren Castellvi double to right center field.
Iowa State began the fourth inning with Alex Johnson drawing a walk and advancing to second on a single by Sydni Jones. The Cyclones scored when Courtney Wray reached on a throwing error that allowed Johnson to score. With runners at third and second, Tori Torrescano hit a fly ball to center for the first out and Jones was called out on the play for leaving early. Amanda Bradberry singled to score Wray and then stole second. Another Golden Eagle error allowed Bradberry to score and Carrie Monroe to get to second. Monroe got to third after Carleigh Berry then singled and advanced to second on the throw. Kelsey Kidwell put down a bunt to score Monroe from third and advance Berry to third. Kelsey Kidwell stole second. Heidi Kidwell followed with an infield single that allowed Berry to score, but Kelsey Kidwell got caught in a run down and was out at the plate.
ISU added a run in the fifth and seventh to round out the scoring.
"Today was our first sight of adversity and now we get a chance to see how this team will react," said Dobson. "We can go south or downhill or they can come back together and say you know what, we're better than what we showed today and we can come back and get after it tomorrow. It doesn't get any easier tomorrow."
Southern Miss will face Eastern Illinois at 9:30 a.m., Saturday before taking on No. 19 Louisiana-Lafayette at 3:30 p.m.
