HATTIESBURG, Miss. - It looked like Southern Miss might dodge the rain for their fourth spring football practice here Wednesday afternoon, but that all changed over the final hour of the workout in Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium as a heavy downpour tried to disrupt the Golden Eagles.
Those heavy rains, though, did not slow things down for the Golden Eagles as Fedora praised the defense in the two hour, 40-minute practice.
"It was wet but the guys got after it, especially defensively," Fedora said. "I was really proud at the way the guys played today and got after the offense. So, we have a lot of work to do before we hit the field on Friday."
It will be a little different practice setting for the Golden Eagles for on Friday as they head south to Ocean Springs High School on the Mississippi Gulf Coast to conduct a workout for the second-straight year. The practice begins at 5:15 p.m., and the team will go through a scrimmage in which the public is invited for free to watch.
"It's a big opportunity for our players," Fedora said. "It's another chance for them to show what they can do in front of these coaches. We get to go down to Ocean Springs and for all our Golden Eagle fans that are down there on the coast, they get to come watch the team. It's also good for our kids because it's like an away game. You get to go somewhere else with people in the stands and they get to show what they can do in front of everyone."
Through the first four practices, Fedora said he does not anticipate in changing the offense under first-year offensive coordinator Blake Anderson, who also coaches the quarterbacks.
"The system is in place and won't change," Fedora said. "We'll tweak it to fit the players that we have coming back and the new players we will insert into the offense, but the philosophy is the same."
The Golden Eagles open the 2010 season at South Carolina on Sept. 2.
