Softball Team Defeats Alcorn State, 8-1

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- In the Golden Eagles' first game of the day, Southern Miss scored seven runs in the final two innings in defeating Alcorn State, 8-1. Freshman pitcher Beth Dietrich (2-0) earned her second win of the season allowing only two hits and no runs in 5.2 innings of work.
Southern Miss took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the fourth after LeJune doubled to left center and moved to third on a sacrifice by Dinelt. She then scored off a Mathis single.
Dietrich kept the Braves' bats in check for the next two innings, giving up a walk and one hit.
Southern Miss put four runs on the board in the sixth with LeJune leading off with a double followed by a bunt single by Dinelt. Hill hit a sacrifice fly that plated LeJune and Dinelt advanced to third. Mathis singled to short before Roosmalen had a RBI ground out to second. Logan James then belted her first home run of the season to give the Golden Eagles a 5-0 lead.
Dietrich gave up a leaf-off double in the bottom half of the frame then retired the next two batters before Luciani came on to finish the game.
Thurman started the seventh with a single to center before Casey Jo Matthews came on to pinch run. Shiflet then sacrificed Matthews to second. LeJune singled past the shortstop, sending Matthews home. Dinelt grounded out before Hill homered to center to give Southern Miss an 8-0 lead.
Alcorn State got a run in the bottom of the seventh after Jasmine Hubbard reached on a Golden Eagle error then stole second. Christine Garcia then singled in Hubbard before Luciani got the final out on a ground out.
Rancilio took the loss for the Braves.
