HATTIESBURG, Miss. - With just a week away from its Dec. 21 date with Louisville in the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl, Southern Miss returned to practice Tuesday afternoon for a two-plus hour practice at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Carlisle Stadium.
Southern Miss coach Larry Fedora said that the focus of practice has shifted toward getting ready for the Cardinals (6-6) and putting in the game plan for the bowl game.
"Last week we got a lot of practice in for the young guys and (they got) a lot of extra reps," said Fedora. "This week we are focused on Louisville, putting the game plan in and we are working toward (the Cardinals for the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl)."
The Cardinals bring in a stout defense that ranks No. 12 in the country, but they also have a solid group on the offensive side of the ball.
"Offensively, they are going to run the ball on you and they are going to play-action pass and try to get you with the deep ball," said Fedora on what he expects out of UofL. "We know what we need to do to stop them and we know what we have to do to move the ball on them. We just have to execute."
For the second-straight day, Southern Miss worked in cold temperatures during their late afternoon workout, but Fedora said that doesn't matter in the team's preparation for next week's game at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla.
"When you come out to (summer) camp it is 100-whatever (degrees) and humid and we still come out and practice," said Fedora. "If it is pouring down raining we still come out and practice and when it is cold, we still come out and practice. It doesn't really matter, because we are going to still come out and practice. It is just a mind-set. If you get your mind right and go out and practice hard and have a good time, you really don't think about those things."
The Golden Eagles continue with three more practice days this week - they are slated to have Thursday off - before traveling to Florida this Saturday.
Tuesday's game can be heard on the Southern Miss Sports Network as well as be seen nationally on ESPN. Game time is set for 7 p.m., CT.
Tickets also can still be purchased by going online at SouthernMiss.com, by calling 1-800-844-TICK (8425) or by visiting the Pat Ferlise Center Monday through Friday during normal office hours.
