Volleyball Falls To UCF, 3-0

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Southern Miss volleyball team had its eight-match winning streak snapped with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-18) loss to UCF Sunday afternoon.
Southern Miss falls to 16-10 overall and 9-6 in conference play while UCF evened its record to 13-13 and 6-8 in the league.
Junior middle blocker Lauren Sears led the team with nine kills in the match. UCF put down 50 kills to Southern Miss' 36.
Junior setter Kelsea Seymour directed the offense with 29 assists. Junior libero Lisa Knecht led the defense with 14 digs. UCF outdug USM, 45-38.
UCF was led by Kristin Fisher with 16 kills as Angelica Crump added 12.
The first set was a back and forth affair with six ties before Southern Miss grabbed the early 9-7 lead on consecutive kills by Sears. UCF rallied to take the 11-10 lead when the Knights got kills from four different players. Mell tied the set with a kill, but UCF came right back with two points on a kill and a USM error for the 13-11 lead. The teams traded kills then Mell and Sarah Jane Bowden teamed for a block got the Eagles to 14-13, but UCF got a Fisher kill and a block forcing USM to take a timeout at 16-13. Out of the timeout, the Knights used a 4-0 run to push the lead to 20-13, then, ended the set outscoring USM 5-4 for the 25-17 win.
The teams traded kills to open the second stanza. UCF scored four straight points take the 8-4 advantage. The Knights maintained control, keeping the Eagles at bay. Southern Miss closed the gap to one on three occasions with the last coming at 17-16 and forcing the Knights to take a timeout. Out of the time, Mell and Bowden block tied the set at 17-17. The teams traded points before a UCF kill and Southern Miss attack error gave the Knights the 20-18 lead. Out of the Eagle timeout, USM got a point back. UCF continued to keep its lead as the two traded kills. UCF ended the set with two big blocks for the 25-22 victory.
The Knights scored six of the first eight points to begin the third set. An Amelia Hendrickson kill, UCF error and Knecht ace pulled Southern Miss within one at 6-5 but two UCF kills and an Eagle attack error put the Knights up 9-6. USM then scored four straight points in taking a 10-9 lead. Out of a Knights' timeout, UCF tied the set at 10-10 with a Fisher kill. The teams traded points for the next eight possessions. With the set tied at 14-14, UCF scored the next three points for a 17-14 lead and from there, outscored USM 8-4 to seal the match at 25-18.
Southern Miss returns home to play its final two home matches against UAB (Nov. 12) and Memphis (Nov. 14).
