Volleyball Preps for Second Meetings with UTEP and UCF

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss volleyball team hits the road for its second meeting of the 2010 season with stops at UTEP on Friday, Nov. 5, and UCF on Sunday, Nov. 7. First serve is set to begin at 8 p.m., in El Paso and 12 p.m., in Orlando.
Southern Miss's match with UCF will be broadcast live on the Bright House Sports Network. Live stats will be available as well.
The Golden Eagles improved to 15-9 and 8-5 in conference play with two C-USA victories on the road last weekend. Southern Miss defeated Memphis, 3-2 (25-21, 20-25, 23-25, 25-20, 15-8), and UAB, 3-1 (29-27, 25-18, 22-25, 25-19).
The Golden Eagles own an attack percentage of .225 this season. Southern Miss is averaging 13.90 kills per set, 13.10 assists per set, 1.09 aces per set, 16.54 digs per set and 1.87 blocks per set. Redshirt junior Ashley Mell, who earned her first C-USA Offensive Player of the Week award, leads the team with 426 kills (4.53 kps), while junior setter Kelsea Seymour has 1,057 assists (11.224 aps). Junior libero Lisa Knecht leads the team with 448 digs (4.77 dps). Juniors Lauren Sears and Mell lead the squad with 63 total blocks (0.67 bps), while junior Sarah Jane Bowden is next with 56 (0.97 bps).
UTEP is coming off two 3-0 losses against Tulsa and SMU last weekend. The Miners sit at 4-8 in conference play and 12-13 overall. Melissa Toth paces the Miners with 240 kills (3.43 kps) while Stephanie Figueroa leads the team with 363 digs (4.32 dps).
The Golden Eagles have already met the Miners this season, recording a 3-0 victory in Hattiesburg. Southern Miss is now 5-3 all-time against the Miners in a series that dates back to 1995.
UCF is 12-12 after a 3-2 loss at SMU and 3-0 loss at Tulsa. The Knights are 5-7 in conference play and will play Tulane prior to their Southern Miss match. Five Knights have recorded over 100 kills, led by Kristin Fisher with 384 (4.41 kps). Meredith Murphy is leading the team with 359 digs (4.03 dps).
Southern Miss played UCF earlier and posted a 3-1 win in Hattiesburg. The Golden Eagles are 7-4 all-time against the Knights.
The Golden Eagles are back in action on Nov. 12 and 14, to close out their home portion of their schedule with a match against Memphis and UAB, respectively.
