Volleyball Closes Out Home Portion of Schedule

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss volleyball team welcomes Conference USA foes UAB and Memphis to Reed Green Coliseum for their second meeting of the 2010 season on Friday and Sunday, respectively. Action is set to begin at 7 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m., on Sunday.
Both matches will be streamed live on the SouthernMiss.com and live stats also will be provided.
Southern Miss Preview
The Golden Eagles enter the weekend with a 16-10 record overall and 9-6 in conference play. Southern Miss defeated UTEP, 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-23), and a loss to UCF, 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-18). The loss snapped an eight-match winning streak.
Southern Miss is averaging 13.85 kills per set, 13.05 assists per set, 1.07 aces per set, 16.51 digs per set and 1.86 blocks per set. Redshirt junior Ashley Mell continues to lead the team with 444 (4.44 kps), while junior setter Kelsea Seymour totaled 1,121 assists (11.21 aps). Junior libero Lisa Knecht paces the defense with 480 digs (4.80 dps). Mell also leads the squad with 68 total blocks (0.68 bps).
Scouting the Blazers
UAB is coming off a 3-2 victory against Rice on Nov. 6. UAB is 5-9 in conference play. The Blazers have five players with 140 or more kills on the season with Sam Serley leading the way with 284 and Jordan McDonald is right behind at 282. Heather Thomas leads the team defensively with 5.23 digs per set.
Southern Miss vs. UAB
The Golden Eagles and Blazers played earlier this season with the USM recording a 3-1 victory at UAB's Bartow Arena. The series is now tied at 18-18 all-time against UAB in a series that dates back to 1981.
Scouting the Tigers
Memphis comes into the weekend with a 15-11 record overall and 6-8 in league play. The Tigers dropped a three-set match at Houston on Nov. 7. Altrese Hawkins leads the team offensively with 402 kills (3.98 kps). Christine Bach paces the team defensively with 385 digs.

Southern Miss and Memphis have played once this season with the Golden Eagles capturing a 3-2 win at Memphis. Southern Miss is now 16-22 all-time against the Tigers in a series that dates back to 1982.
What's Next?
The Golden Eagles hits the road for their final three matches of the season, traveling to East Carolina on Nov. 19, Marshall on Nov. 21 and close out the season Nov. 27 at Tulane.
