Houston Gets Past Southern Miss Volleyball Team, 3-1

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss volleyball team lost Houston in four games, 3-1, by the score of 25-20, 22-25, 25-23, 25-23 to fall to 8-8 on overall and 1-4 in league play.
Ashley Mell led the Golden Eagles with a double-double, 18 kills and 10 digs while Halie Ecker added a double-double of her own with 12 kills and 12 digs. Kelsea Seymour collected a double-double as well with 42 assists and 11 digs. Lisa Knecht led the Eagles with 20 digs.
Houston placed five players in double-digit kills led by Stephanie Nwachukwu with 14. Amanda Carson totaled a match-high 30 digs in the contests.
Houston (10-8, 4-2) pounded down 18 kills in set one with a .351 attack percentage for the 25-20 win. The Cougars held the Eagles to .159 attack percentage.
Southern Miss bounced back to tie the match at 1-1 after the second set. USM took the early lead and never trailed during the set in the 25-22 win.
Both team battled throughout the third set. The Golden Eagles never led but the set was tied three times with the last coming at 14-14. From there, USM kept within reach but Houston eventually built a 24-20 lead and won even though USM fought off three set points before Houston got the 25-23 win.
USM took the early 4-0 lead to start the fourth set, but Houston battled back to tie the set with four-straight points. The lead went back and forth between the two teams. The set featured 12 ties and five lead changes. Houston out hit the Eagles, .268 to .186., in taking the 25-23 win.
The two teams return to the court in a Sunday match-up at 1 p.m.
