SOUTHERN MISS ATHLETIC MEDIA RELATIONS Post Game Quotes
Southern Miss Head Coach Larry Fedora
Opening Statement: "I really think that we played a complete game again tonight, in all three phases. I was pleased with our passing game and the way we played throughout the game. I was pleased with the way the defense and special teams played. We were grinding pretty good offensively and then some things went wrong in the second half for us. The biggest problem I can see without looking at everything is that we had too many penalties. We had a penalty before we even kicked the ball off. We will have to look at some things and make some adjustments with those. I was really proud of the way the team played. Our focus was to be 1-0 and we are."
On the Penalty Before the Game Started: "We have been doing the same thing going on three years now. It's what we do at home. We let the other team know that we do that before."
On the Running Game: "We took what they gave us. The offensive line felt like we could run the football and we got to a point where we were running the ball effectively. There was quite a few passes that we had called but checked to a run because of certain things they were doing, but we ran the ball effectively when we ran it."
On holding Marshall to 180 yards of offense: "That is three weeks in a row that the defense has played very well. I think they have a lot of confidence in what they are doing and have a lot of trust for each other. They believe in their brothers and have their back and know they are going to do what they need to do. I am proud in the way they are playing. They have a lot of confidence in what they are doing and they believe they are a good football team."
On Opening Conference USA Play with a Win: "It was big. That was the script that we wrote. We wanted it to happen the way that things happened tonight, and it did. The main goal all week was to be 1-0 in Conference USA play and I thought the guys did a great job tonight. I want to go back to the coaching staff also. They did a great job in coaching these guys and preparing them as they have all season. I am really proud of those guys also."
Southern Miss Player Quotes Marshall Game ... Oct. 2, 2010
Quarterback Austin Davis On the Offense's Performance
"We came out strong. I think it is really crucial for us as I look back at the first five games that we start fast. We started fast (tonight) and played a really good first half. In the second half, we came out a little sluggish, but we were able to finish in the end."
On the play of Johdrick Morris
"He is a big-time playmaker. I knew coming into the year he would be that type of guy, especially with DeAndre (Brown) being out and Quentin Pierce going out tonight. Johdrick is going to continue to make plays for us and is going to help us out a lot. He creates a big mismatch in the middle at tight end on the linebackers."
On Starting Conference USA Play
"Our goal is to win the conference championship so we kind of looked at this as the first game of the season. The rest of our games were preseason. There was some extra excitement to get the conference season started and right now we are 1-0."
Linebacker Korey Williams
On Having an Attitude
"Last year, the conference championship slipped away that easy, so we wanted to set the tone this first game."
On the attitude of the defense this season
"Last year, I have to admit I was more concerned about personal stats. Now this year, every guy is in it for a common goal. Nobody cares who gets the tackle. We celebrate with each other (after a stop) and it is fun. It is really fun when everybody gets a chance to make plays. "
Placekicker Danny Hrapmann
On his career-long, 51-yard field goal
"I looked up for a split-second to make sure it was going through, but after that I was already hugging on Pete (Boehme). It was a good celebration. As soon as I kicked the ball, I can kind of tell whether it is going in our not and five seconds later the crowd was cheering. It felt pretty good."
