Volleyball Falls To Tulsa

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team lost to Tulsa by a score of 25-23, 25-23,25-10 in Conference USA action Friday in Reed Green Coliseum.
The Golden Eagles dropped to 8-6 overall and 1-2 in league play while Tulsa improved to 12-2 overall and 3-0.
Redshirt junior Ashley Mell (Yorba Linda, Calif.) led the Eagles with 10 kills while Lauren Sears (Ashburn, Va.) added nine. Lisa Knecht (Metairie, La.) totaled 13 digs.
As a team, Southern Miss finished with 38 kills, 38 assists, 47 digs and 5.0 team blocks while the Golden Hurricane totaled 47 kills, 44 assists, 46 digs and 8.0 team blocks. Tulsa outhit the Eagles .333 to .188.
Tulsa's Tyler Henderson tallied a match-high 23 kills and Jessica Adams added 10 digs.
Both teams played the first set evenly. Tulsa led 16-13, forcing the Eagles to take a timeout. Following the timeout Amelia Hendrickson put down a kill to get within two, 16-14. Tulsa then used a 5-1 run for a 21-15 lead; again forcing the Eagles took their second timeout. Tulsa eventually led, 24-18, but Southern Miss fought off five set points before TU took the first set 25-23.
Southern Miss took a 2-0 lead to start the second set before Tulsa tied the set at 3-3 behind Henderson's two kills. The teams battled back-and-forth and with the set tied at 10-10, Tulsa outscored USM 5-1 for a 15-11 lead. The Golden Eagles stayed close and tied the set at 18-18. Tulsa eventually pushed its lead to 24-21, but Kelsea Seymour and Mell each had kills to get within 24-23 before Tulsa ended the set with a Kelsey Hancock kill for the 25-23 win.
Following the intermission, Tulsa opened the third set scoring the first six points and never looked back. The Golden Hurricane led 17-10 as the Eagles took their final timeout, but Jordan Clampitt served out the set for a 25-10 win.
Southern Miss travels to Dallas, Texas, for a match against SMU on Sunday.
