Eagles Start Focus on C-USA Opening Opponent UCF

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss began installing its game plan here Tuesday afternoon for its Conference USA season opener against UCF, Saturday, at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m.
The Golden Eagles went 2 ½ hours in full pads and Southern Miss coach Larry Fedora liked the effort he saw out of his team as they prepare for the Knights this weekend.
"Today was a good hard work day, we really got after it," Fedora said. "We have installed the base of our game plan now and are into the season game-week mode, so it is going to take some getting used to for some of the guys to realize they only have three days to prepare."
Fedora talked about his receiving corps after practice, three of which that have been hampered by injuries and one who is now practicing with the squad.
Seniors Freddie Parham and Gerald Baptiste were both banged up a little bit in the contest against Alcorn State and Fedora said that they would be fine this weekend, but both sported red jerseys on Tuesday to hold them from contact during the workout as a precautionary measure.
Fedora also talked about sophomore DeAndre Brown's progress. The Freshman All-American from a year ago did not play in the season opener against ASU. "He did all right today," Fedora said. "He got tackled, caught the ball, ran routes and did everything so we will see where he goes. I am sure at the end of the week we will talk to the doctors and see how they feel and go from there."
Fedora spoke as well on the progress of signee Justin Jordan, who just joined the team last week.
"I hope he is able to contribute at some point," Fedora said. "It will be whenever he learns what he can do. You are asking a guy to learn an offense in a matter of days when the other guys have been practicing for 29 days, so I am not sure when that will be."
