Volleyball Sweeps ULM, 3-0, In Volleyball Action

MONROE, La. - The Southern Miss volleyball swept ULM in three sets (25-17, 25-14, 25-20) Tuesday night, running their record to a school-best 11-1.
Ashley Mell and Angela Hlavaty led the attack with eight kills each with Mell and Kelsea Seymour tallying nine digs apiece. Halie Ecker recorded three of the team's 10 aces.
Stephanie Wardach led ULM with nine kills and Christy Tribble posted a match-high 13 digs.
Both teams traded points to open the first set. The set was tied four times before Southern Miss scored three unanswered points for a 7-4 lead. Following a ULM timeout, the Golden Eagles used a 4-1 run to go up 11-5. ULM closed to within four points, 15-11, but that was as close as the Warhawks would get as Southern Miss took the first set, 25-17. Mell led the way with four kills.
Southern Miss popped out to a 7-3 lead before ULM battled back scoring five straight points for an 8-7 lead. The Golden Eagles regained the lead, 11-8, after scoring four consecutive points. From there, USM outscored ULM 14-6 for a 25-14 win. Southern Miss finished the set with an attack percentage of .370 with Hlavaty collecting four kills.
USM led briefly 4-2 to start the third set. ULM, then, ran off six consecutive taking an 8-4 lead. The Warhawks pushed their lead to 12-6 before Hlavaty jump started the Eagles' comeback putting down two consecutive kills, starting a 6-0 run to tie the set at 12-12. The lead changed hands three times before USM put down two kills and two blocks to take a 17-14 lead. ULM got within two points on two occasions, but the Golden Eagles ended the set with a 4-1 run for a 25-20 win.
Southern Miss returns to action in the UCF Tournament, Sept. 18-19, including opening Conference USA play.
