HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Just eight days prior to its season opener, the Southern Miss football returned to the practice field Friday afternoon to continue to prepare for its first opponent, Alcorn State.
The Golden Eagles went through a 2 ½ hour practice in shoulder pads and shorts and continued to put in its playbook for the Braves.
"This is the second day of hammering on Alcorn (State) and the guys are really picking up the game plan," Golden Eagle coach Larry Fedora said. "They are executing and really playing hard."
Fedora also said that two of the 2009 signing class have finally joined the team including freshman Gerald West of Mobile, Ala., and junior college signee and wide receiver Justin Jordan.
West participated in practice for the first time on Friday.
"I really didn't have a chance to watch him," Fedora said. "He didn't get into any team situations, but I'll have to ask Coach (Travaris) Robinson. I'm sure he looked quick and fresh."
Jordan has not begun practicing with the team as of yet as he continues to wait for final clearance to play.
"He has taken care of all of his business and has been admitted into school," Fedora said. "He'll be starting classes just as soon as we get the final okay from Blinn Junior College. As soon as they post his AA degree then it's done."
The Golden Eagles and Alcorn State are set to open their respective 2009 season at The Rock next Saturday with kickoff set for 6 p.m.
Tickets for the game against the Braves are still available as well as season and flex plan options. To order, call 1-800-844-TICK (8425), go online at SouthernMiss.com or go by the Pat Ferlise Ticket Office, Monday-through-Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
