HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss beat the rain Friday afternoon in getting a 2 hour, 15 minute workout in shoulder pads and shorts here Friday afternoon in its final practice before its second scrimmage of the preseason.
Golden Eagle coach Larry Fedora says he is looking forward to see how his team responds during this scrimmage after they have now been practicing over two weeks.
"We are looking to see how far people have come along since the last one and how hard they are going to play," Fedora said. "We got guys who are tired and guys who are banged up. We are going to see how they play through it. We got some adversity so we will see what happens."
Still, jobs are trying to be won as the Golden Eagles set their sights toward the season opener Sept. 5, at home against Alcorn State.
"There are some places that are getting clearer and clearer and there are some that are still in the air," Fedora said on the shaping of the team's depth chart. "You got some guys that are stepping out and jumping ahead of guys and you have those that are still fighting for spots. We got some guys fighting like crazy on special teams so that is going to play a big role in it all."
Fedora also said that senior running back Damion Fletcher, who has been hampered with an injured hamstring, did more in practice on Friday.
"They (the training staff) got him back in a white jersey and he was getting some reps today," Fedora said.
The scrimmage is closed to the public.
