HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss worked through its first two-practice day here at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility here Tuesday.
The Golden Eagles worked through very hot temperatures during the morning workout as the team practiced in shoulder pads and shorts. An early afternoon rain storm and subsequent cloud cover kept the temperatures a little milder for the second practice in full pads.
Southern Miss coach Larry Fedora, who has enjoyed the practice effort and attitude over the first week, wants to see his team continue its progress through their hard work at practice.
"We had two tough practices, but we got after it," Fedora said. "The guys played hard, although we had some guys that were a little hesitant this morning trying to save themselves for a second practice. They are going to find out that you have to go hard every time."
Fedora said he likes running his team through two practices during a day, despite the Golden Eagles utilizing the two practices only twice during fall camp.
"I like two-a-days as they are a lot about mental toughness and you can find out a lot about your team when you put them in adverse situations," Fedora added.
To help them get through the adverse situations, the second-year coach is preaching to the Golden Eagles that they need to continue to push them farther than they think they can accomplish.
"We are going to try and push them to exhaustion and show them they can go farther than they think they can," Fedora said. "Their bodies will take more than their minds will and if we can condition those minds to take what their minds really can take, then we will be ok."
The 2009 season opener is set against Alcorn State on Sept. 5. Game time is set for 6 p.m., at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium.
