HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss enjoyed its second day in full pads here Monday afternoon as the squad went through its sixth practice of fall camp.
The Golden Eagles spent a considerable time working on special teams during the practice while also utilizing the final 15 minutes for a controlled scrimmage to go over specific down and yardage situations.
Coach Larry Fedora expressed his pleasure for the defense during the 2 1/2 hour practice.
"The defense really showed up today," Fedora said. "We worked a lot of short yardage situations and they created five turnovers. We can win a lot of games if they can do that."
The defense also added another black jersey on the field on Monday as junior C.J. Bailey was bestowed that honor by the defensive coaches. The Golden Eagle defense, which typically wears black practice jerseys, came out in gold to start fall camp and the players have had to earn it traditional jersey in their effort not only in practice but in all aspects of their preparation for the 2009 campaign.
"I hope the black jersey for the defense is really catching on," Fedora added. "C.J. became the third player to earn one after yesterday. He had been really close for a few days then had another couple of picks yesterday that put him over the top. Hopefully, there will be another one tomorrow."
Fedora also praised several freshman players who have stood out so far during fall camp.
"We have quite a few freshman that are out there and getting some reps, including (defensive lineman) Octavius Thomas, (running back) Tracey Lampley, (defensive back) Deron Wilson and (tight end) Ryan Hanks, and are all doing some good things. I am really please with the whole class to be honest with you."
Still, the second-year coach stressed that his team had to continue to improve and to stay focused as the rigors of camp continues.
"We are looking for guys who play the game the way we want it played, which is hard no matter what," Fedora said. "Anybody can do it on day one, but it's the guys that can do it when you are tired and sore and who can make their body go further than they think they can."
The Golden Eagles continue with its practice schedule Tuesday afternoon as they ready themselves for the 2009 season opener against Alcorn State. Game time is set for 6 p.m., at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium.
