Southern Miss Announces 2009 Volleyball Schedule

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team has announced its schedule for the 2009 season with sixth-year head coach Ricci Luyties and his Golden Eagles set to compete in four invitational tournaments at they look to improve on a 17-13 record last season.
The Golden Eagle schedule will feature a 12-match home schedule and five teams that competed in the 2008 NCAA Tournament.
Southern Miss will play its season-opener on the road at the Samford Tournament, Aug. 28-29 against Tennessee State (Aug. 28), Samford (Aug. 29) and ULM (Aug. 29). After a road match with Nicholls State (Sept. 1), the Golden Eagles will host the Southern Miss Invitational (Sept. 4-5) and play matches versus Sam Houston State, Jacksonville and Louisiana Tech.
The Golden Eagles will play on the road for the next 10 matches that include stops at Mississippi State (Sept. 9), before heading to the South Alabama Tournament (Sept. 11-12), playing against South Alabama (Sept. 11), Jackson State (Sept. 12) and Nicholls State (Sept. 12) then traveling to ULM (Sept. 15).
Southern Miss opens C-USA play at UCF (Sept. 18) before taking on FIU (Sept. 18) and Florida A&M (Sept. 19) in the UCF Tournament. The Golden Eagles conclude their 10-match road swing at Marshall (Sept. 25) and at East Carolina (Sept. 27).
The Golden Eagles return home for a two-match set against Memphis (Oct. 2) and UAB (Oct.) 4, followed by trips to Tulane (Oct. 7) and UTEP (Oct. 11).
Southern Miss plays four consecutive home matches beginning with Houston (Oct. 16), followed by Rice (Oct. 18), Marshall (Oct. 22) and East Carolina (Oct. 25).
The Golden Eagles travel to Memphis (Oct. 30) and UAB (Nov. 1) before returning home to close out the regular season with three straight home matches, SMU (Nov. 6), Tulsa (Nov. 8) and UCF (Nov. 13).
The Conference USA Tournament will take place Nov. 20-22, in Houston, Texas on the campus of Rice University. The top eight teams in the final regular season standings will qualify for the tournament.
Southern Miss returns 11 letterwinners including four starters and welcomes four freshmen.
