Track and Field Athletes Perform Well At Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas - The Southern Miss track and field teams had a good showing at the Texas Relays over the weekend as two athletes posted regional qualifying marks in three events.
Junior Ashley May recorded regional qualifying marks in the long jump and triple jump. May posted a mark of 6.01m (19-8.75) in the long jump for ninth place in the Section a Univ/Coll field, then followed with a mark of 12.82m (42-00.75) in the triple jump for a tie for eighth.
The 4x100-meter relay team (Chastity Riggien, Karla Thurmond, Romesha Anderson and Tori Bowie) ran a time of 46.02, finishing 11th overall out of 40 relay teams. In the 4x200 relay, the team (Riggien, Thurmond, Cheris Fletcher and Bowie) finished third overall out of 14 teams with a school record time of 1:36.27. The team of Fletcher, Terria Wheeler, Kirsten Richards and Anderson ran a season-best time of 3:47.39 in the 4x400-meter relay.
Freshman Kyle Smith recorded a regional qualifying mark in the javelin with a throw of 68.20m (223-9) for a season-best and placing first in the Section B Univ/Coll at the Texas Relays. His throw got him an invitation to the Section A Univ/Coll where he finished sixth with a throw of 66.33m (217-7). Teammate Noah Slater recorded a throw of 60.58m (198-9) in the javelin.
Southern Miss will next compete in the South Alabama Invitational, Apr. 11.
